From June 4 to 5, 2014 the Convention for World Environment Day will hold at the United Nations Headquarters, UN Plaza, New York, USA. This program is held in celebration of the World Environment Day 2014 to raise global awareness of the need to take positive environmental action.
United Nations and the Environment
The Preamble to the Charter of the United Nations states that it is determined “to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom”, while Chapter 1 declares that one of the basic purposes of the United Nations is “to achieve international cooperation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural or humanitarian character, and in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion”. This has led to the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), an international institution that coordinates the United Nations activities, assisting developing countries in implementing environmentally sound policies and practices.
World Environment Day
World Environment Day is an annual event that is aimed at being the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. It is run by UNEP. World Environment Day activities take place all year round and climax on June 5 every year, involving everyone from everywhere. The celebration began in 1972 and has grown to become one of the main vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and encourages political attention and action. Through World Environment Day, the United Nations Environment Programme is able to personalize environmental issues and enable everyone to realize, not only their responsibility, but also their power to become agents for change in support of sustainable and equitable development.
